Tragedy Cancels Superpole at Phillip Island

The World Superbike Superpole qualifying event at Phillip Island has been cancelled following the death of rider Oscar McIntyre after he, Michael Lockhart and Luke Burgess collided on the second lap of a support race. Observers of the crash that killed the 17 year old said it was reminiscent of the crash that took Marco Simoncelli’s life last year.

Despite getting immediate medical attention, the fallen ASTK racer was not able to recover and lost his life soon after the collision. Cancelations of World Superbike sessions are not commonplace; in fact, the last one cancelled was due to snow at Donington in 1998.

Due to the cancellation, Saturday’s racing grid was determined by the fastest times put in during the Qualifying Practice 2 session. The top three positions were earning by Tom Sykes, Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa.  Here at Georgia Motorcycle Insurance, our thoughts and prayers go out to Oscar McIntyre’s family and friends.
